WHY DO WE NEED RULES AND LAWS?
We need rules because if we didn't have rules the Earth would be a pig sty and very
dangerous. If we didn't have laws people would be able to do what ever they like.
They would steal and take what ever they wanted and not get in trouble.
People need rules and laws in there life so they can tell right from wrong.
What is a Rule and a Law?
A Rule is a Principle governing conduct, action,
procedures and arrangements.
A Law is a legislation of principles and regulations written by the Government which is
applicable to the people of the nation.
Why should rules apply equally and be public?
Rules apply equally to everyone so that every body has to follow one set
of rules, and there isn't different standards for different people.
An example of this is the speed limit on the road.
All rules have a reason e.g children go to school so that everyone has
an equal chance of getting a good education and getting a good job.
How are laws made in Austalia?
Before a law is made it has to go to Parliament in the House of Representatives as a Bill. It then
gets voted on by all the members so everyone gets a say.
Changes might have to be made to it until they all agree on it. It then gets passed on to the
Senate or Upper House for the people in the Senate to have their say.
If the Senate is not happy with the Bill it gets sent back to the House of Representatives for
them to change it more. Then it can go back to the Senate and if more people agree than don't
agree the Bill gets turned into a law.
